Food for Thought

Before we can make deep changes in our lives, we have to look into our diet,
our way of consuming. We have to live in such a way that we stop consuming the things that poison us and intoxicate us. Then we will have the strength to allow the best in us to arise and we will no longer be victims of anger, or frustration.

~ Thich Nat Hahn, Buddhist Monk

I have been a passionate advocate of the old saying, “you are what you eat”, for most of my life. I am currently working on my degree in Holistic Nutrition, which integrates the whole person, mind, body, and soul.  I bring this passion to my skin care practice because I believe that how we care for ourselves on all levels will effect how we feel, function, and look. What and how we eat ultimately reflects on our skin.

Eating With Awareness:

The daily choices we make about what to eat certainly impact how we age, look and feel. Just as important is the awareness that we have regarding how we eat what we eat.  The environment in which food is prepared and consumed makes an important contribution to the nourishing influence food has on the body.  By paying attention to a few simple principles, you can help your system extract the highest level of nourishment from everything you eat!

  • Eat in a settled atmosphere.
  • Don’t eat when you are upset.
  • Sit down to eat.
  • Eat only when you feel hungry.
  • Reduce ice-cold foods and drinks, they put out your digestive fire.
  • Don’t talk while chewing your food, engage in light hearted conversations.
  • Eat at a moderate pace, neither too fast or too slow.
  • Wait until one meal is digested before eating the next.
  • Sip warm water with your meals.
  • Eat freshly-cooked meals whenever possible. Reduce frozen, leftover, un-cooked, microwaved and canned foods.
  • Minimize raw foods-cooked food is much easier to digest.
  • Try and experience all six tastes at every meal.
  • Leave 1/3 to 1/4 of your stomach empty to aid digestion.
  • Sit quietly for a few minutes after your meal.  Take a walk if you can.

Creating Balance with Food:

In her infinite wisdom, nature has packaged her food sources into six tastes as a way to inform us about each food’s influence on our mind-body physiology.  All six tastes should be taken at every meal to represent the nutrients available and create satisfaction.  In addition to nourishing the body, food serves as a source to bring balance and harmony between mind and body.  The tastes are sweet, salty, sour, bitter, astringent, and pungent.

Strengthen your Digestive Fire:

The ability to fully digest what we eat, absorbing what nourishes the body, and eliminating what is toxic is the key to optimizing your health.  We are what we eat, and more profoundly how well our body had digested it!  Eastern traditions teach that our “digestive fire” needs to be strong in order to metabolize our foods to best support health.  Herbs, which are foods, are very supportive in fueling the fire, as well as digestive enzymes, which help to break down and assimilate nutrients.  My favorites are Zyflamend and Ginger tonics by New Chapter.
